La Heutte is a municipality in the Jura bernois administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the French-speaking Bernese Jura (Jura Bernois).

La Heutte was first mentioned in 1393 as Hütte. It was first called by the current name in 1727.[3]
La Heutte is located in the lower part of Vallon de Saint-Imier, 6 kilometers (3.7 mi) from the town of Bienne. It is located in a narrow valley that lies on the old Roman road between Augusta Raurica (Augst) und Petinesca (Studen). La Heutte has an area, as of 2009[update], of 8.08 km2 (3.12 sq mi). Of this area, 2 km2 (0.77 sq mi) or 24.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 5.24 km2 (2.02 sq mi) or 64.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.74 km2 (0.29 sq mi) or 9.2% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.03 km2 (7.4 acres) or 0.4% is either rivers or lakes and 0.05 km2 (12 acres) or 0.6% is unproductive land.[4]
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 1.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 4.0%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 2.8% of the area 62.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.1% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 5.9% is used for growing crops and 9.5% is pastures and 9.0% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]
La Heutte has a population (as of 31 December 2010) of 483.[1] As of 2007[update], 9.7% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 0.4%. Most of the population (as of 2000[update]) speaks French (75.2%), with German being second most common (20.1%) and Spanish being third ( 2.9%).
In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SPS which received 38.6% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SVP (26.2%), the FDP (17.3%) and the Green Party (6.1%).
The age distribution of the population (as of 2000[update]) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 21.5% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.1% and the seniors (over 64 years old) make up 15.4%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In La Heutte about 68.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).
La Heutte has an unemployment rate of 1.74%. As of 2005[update], there were 21 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 5 businesses involved in this sector. 12 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 4 businesses in this sector. 41 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 9 businesses in this sector.[5] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
